What does 2023 have in store?
I feel confident that 2023 is the beginning of the end of the end of something. An ending that we’ve been in so long, that we’ve forgotten what it means for things not to end. Getting drained constantly, losing hope, but still doing what we want regardless. For some people, this is how we make sense of reality.
But in 2023, I feel sure that all of a sudden, new things will emerge that will shock us. Maybe the phases you were settled in, you’ve settled in now for good. If you’ve fallen off the tracks, maybe you’ve found yourself comfortable wandering. And it might surprise you that in your wandering, you found yourself right back to where you started, and everyone is calling you to hop back on.
I struggle to call 2023 the beginning of something, because things are still ending, falling apart, asking for your attention in grief and sorrow. To feel the sluggishness of time sit motionless inside your muscles and still feel yourself carsick on the conveyor belt.
When some things end while others begin, and there’s no clear-cut empty ground between, we find ourselves second guessing the speed we run ahead. And even when we want to mourn, we find the grass growing around and through our clothes, the cracks in houses, and spring pouring into our nostrils. I don’t have any prescription for this phenomenon. I think this year will ask us to be brave, to be silly, and to be grounded.
In 2022, we carried longer-term fractures with us and attempted to repair them. We also learned to let what’s broken stay broken. Can you identify where the compassion, forgiveness, and openness transpired?
I hope that we will love each other a lot in the new year. We are entering a new world, and I hope that we will remember that we can never replace the warmth of each other.
